Someone in your area picks up their phone and types dentist near me, or pizza near me, or plumber near me. Google shows a map with three businesses under it. That box is the map pack, and for any business that serves a local area it is the most valuable piece of screen space there is. It sits above the normal website results, and on a phone it often fills the whole screen before anyone scrolls.
75 percent of local clicks go to the top three Google results. So when your competitor sits in that box and you do not, you are not losing by a bit. For the search that matters most, you are not in the running at all.
Google is not choosing the best business
This is the part that annoys good operators, so it is worth saying plainly. Google has no way of knowing who does the most careful work or who treats people properly when something goes wrong. It cannot see your premises, your standards or the customers who keep coming back. All it can read is signals, and it ranks whoever gives it the clearest ones.
For local results there are three big ones. How close your business is to the person searching. How relevant your business looks to what they actually typed. How well known and trusted your business appears across the rest of the web. Everything below is just a practical version of those three.
What your competitor probably has
In most cases it is not clever tricks. It is that they finished the boring work and you have not. Have a look at the business that outranks you and you will usually find most of this list.
- A Google Business Profile that is completely filled in, not half done.
- A primary category that matches what people search, rather than something vague.
- Reviews that keep arriving, not a burst from two years ago.
- The same business name, phone number and address everywhere they appear online.
- Real photos of their work, their premises and their team, added regularly rather than once at setup.
- Pages on their website that name each service they offer and the areas they actually cover.
- A website that loads fast on a phone on mobile data.
Proximity is real, but it is not the end of it
Distance matters. If your registered address is forty minutes from the searcher and your competitor is in the next street, you are starting behind. That is why the map pack changes as you drive across town, and why checking your own ranking from your kitchen table tells you almost nothing about what a customer across the city sees.
But proximity is only one of the three. A well set up business a bit further out regularly beats a closer one with a thin profile and no reviews. You cannot move your premises, so you win on the other two.
The order to fix it in
Do not start with the hard stuff. Start with what Google can read today.
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile if you have not already. Nothing works until you control it.
- Fix your primary category. This single field decides which searches you are even eligible for.
- Add your services, your service area, your hours and your phone number, and check the phone number matches your website exactly.
- Put twenty or thirty real photos in, of your work, your premises and your team, and keep adding them.
- Get a steady habit of asking for reviews after every job, appointment or visit.
- Then build out proper service pages on your website so the profile has something solid behind it.
That order is deliberate. The first three take an afternoon and often move things on their own. The last two are the ones that hold the position once you have it. How we approach local SEO walks through what we check first and why.
How long before anything happens
Profile fixes like a wrong category can show up quickly, sometimes within days. Reviews, photos, website pages and mentions across the web work slower, because they are about trust and trust is built over time. Anyone who promises you the top spot by next week is guessing, and usually selling.
The honest version is this. Most of the time, you are not losing the map pack to a marketing genius. You are losing it to a competitor who filled in the form properly and kept asking for reviews. The category mistakes that quietly block you is the next thing worth reading, because that one field undoes more good work than anything else.
