The Google Business Profile category mistakes that cost you jobs

By Sajal Kumar Local SEO

There is one field on your Google Business Profile that does more for your visibility than anything else you can edit, and it takes thirty seconds to change. It is your primary category, and a lot of businesses have it set to something that quietly keeps them out of the searches they want.

It is worth understanding before you touch it, because it is also the easiest thing to get wrong twice.

What the primary category actually does

Google does not read your profile and form an opinion about what you do. You tell it, by choosing from its list. That choice decides which searches you are eligible to appear in at all. Not where you rank in them. Whether you are in the running.

Your primary category carries by far the most weight. Your extra categories help, but they do not rescue a wrong primary. If yours says Health and Beauty and your money is in laser treatments, you are asking to be considered for the wrong race.

The mistakes we see most

These come up again and again, and every one of them is fixable this afternoon.

  • Choosing something broad and safe. Store, Business Service or Health and Beauty feels like it covers everything, which is exactly why it competes for nothing.
  • Picking the category for what you would like to be doing rather than what you are actually hired for today.
  • Leaving whatever was selected during setup years ago, often by somebody else.
  • Stacking twenty extra categories to cover every possibility. It dilutes what you look like and can pull you into searches you do not want.
  • Listing services you do not really offer, which brings in calls you have to turn down and customers who feel misled.
  • Choosing a category that does not match the work your website and reviews describe, so your signals argue with each other.

That last one matters more than it sounds. If your category, your website pages and the work your reviews mention all point at the same thing, you look obvious and easy to rank. If they point three ways, you look unclear.

How to pick the right one

Work backwards from the customer, not from how you describe yourself at a barbecue.

  • Write down the exact words a customer types when they have the problem you most want to be called about.
  • Search those words on your phone and look at who is in the map pack.
  • Check what categories those businesses are using. It is visible on their profile and it tells you what Google already associates with that search.
  • Pick the most specific category in Google's list that genuinely describes the work, rather than the broadest one that technically includes it.
  • Add two or three extra categories for your other real services, and stop there.

Specific wins. Pizza Restaurant beats Restaurant, Orthodontist beats Dentist, Electrician beats Contractor. If there is a category closer still to the work you most want, use it, as long as it is honest.

What to do after you change it

A few practical notes, because this is where people get spooked and change it back.

  • Change it once and leave it alone. Flipping categories back and forth gives Google nothing to settle on.
  • Expect a short wobble. Rankings can move around for a few days before they steady.
  • Make sure your website backs up the new category with a real page about that service, otherwise the claim has nothing behind it.
  • Check your services list and your business description say the same thing as the category.
  • Look again in a month, properly, not on day two with your heart in your mouth.

If visibility drops and stays down after a month, the category was probably not the match you thought. That is information, not a disaster. Our local SEO service starts with exactly this audit, because there is no point doing clever work on top of a wrong category.

Why such a small thing matters so much

Because everything else sits on it. Reviews, photos, posts, service pages and mentions all push you up within the searches you are eligible for. None of them make you eligible for a search your category rules you out of.

Get the category right first, then do the rest of the work and watch it actually count. Why your competitor is in the map pack covers the other signals, and the order to tackle them in.
